About Karlena Farms
Karlena Farms is located on the Saanich Peninsula in beautiful Victoria, BC, Canada. The farm was originally purchased in 1969 as a fully operational 40 acre orchard. Formally called “The Saanich Orchard”, approximately 9500 trees were harvested annually on the property. Growing 5 varieties of pears, 3 varieties of cherries, and 22 varieties of apples, it was the largest orchard west of the Okanagan. The Saanich Orchard was very well known in the community and it was not unusual to see a lineup of cars all the way down the street waiting their turn to get into the farm to pick up their produce.
Sadly, in 1990 the apple and cherry trees were all removed due to a tree trunk disease known as Canker. So, from 1990 onward, the large fields are now planted and harvested for hay. The original pear patch still stands today and produces 3500lbs of pears yearly which gets donated.
Now, Lena and Karly McMurtry run the horse business on the farm. Karlena Farms breeds, shows and sells carefully selected AMHA and AMHR miniature horses. As well, they have a select amount of performance Quarter horses that specialize in reining and Western Pleasure.
Karlena Farms also raises high quality Bernese Mountain Dogs. If you are looking for a fun, loving and loyal family addition, please visit our “Bernese Moutain Dog” page to see more and watch for upcoming litters!
